Part A

Medicare Part A is the hospital insurance component of the Medicare program. When Part A is combined with Medicare Part B, they create what is commonly known as Original Medicare.

How Can I Enroll in Part A?

You become eligible to enroll in Medicare three months before you turn 65. This marks the beginning of your Initial Enrollment Period, which lasts for a total of seven months.

If you get benefits through Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B.

Medicare Part A Costs

While some Medicare beneficiaries pay no monthly premium for Part A, there are other costs you must be aware of. We have outlined the 2022 costs for Part A below:

Part A Monthly Premium:

  • If you paid Medicare taxes for less than 30 quarters, you pay $499/month
  • If you paid Medicare taxes for 30-39 quarters, you pay $274/month
  • If you paid Medicare taxes for 40 quarters (10 years), you pay no premium

  • $1,556 per each benefit period

Part A Coinsurance:

  • Days 1-60: $0 coinsurance during each benefit period
  • Days 61-90: $389 coinsurance each day of each benefit period
  • Days 91+: $778 for each lifetime reserve day
  • Beyond lifetime reserve days: You are responsible for all costs
